Fantastic news today as the New Life Project in the Headlands, Hartlepool has been awarded a grant of 4.52 million from the department for children, schools and families to help fund a new arts project.
This project will create a specialist performing arts facility including all varieties of dance, music practice and recording and drama to benefit 13 to 19 year olds. In partnership with a local school and two other organisations the project includes involvement from young people in its design and implementation. It will open 7 days a week and also offers workshops, advice and support sessions.
Local Member of Parliament, Iain Wright said
“This is a tremendous boost for a great part of Hartlepool. Earlier in the year I helped organise a gig at the Abbey Street project with local band Elyk. So I am pleased that this substantial sum of money will help build on the progress already achieved. This was one of the highest grants issued and I am heartened that Ed Balls listened to my lobbying on this subject and we have achieved our aim of receiving millions of pounds for Hartlepool. It’s important that young people have facilities in order to learn and grow and to stem the tide of Anti social behaviour. “
The Governments ambitious plans for new world class youth facilities in communities across the country have been kick-started with Ed Balls and Beverley Hughes announcing the first round of funding under the ‘Myplace’ programme.
£62 million of fast track funding has been awarded to 21 successful bidders across the country. This is the first wave of funding from a pot worth over £200m to provide exciting safe places for all young people to go to and where young people can take part in a wide range of positive activities such as sport, dance and music.
The fast track funding round has received an additional £11.7m to increase the original £50m allocation to £61.7m. This was in response to the high quality of applications received and is in line with the Government's commitment to invest in and bring forward capital projects to support local economies.
Myplace is driving a transformation across the country in the way facilities for young people are planned and delivered. All Myplace projects are based on partnership between councils and third sector organisations and are driven by the active participation of young people and their views and needs.
